How & why

Origins and early life

Michel Dreyfus-Schmidt was born at Belfort on 17 June 1932 and died in the same town on 7 September 2008.

Work and career

He came from a Jewish family of Alsatian origin that had left Mulhouse for Belfort after the German annexation of 1871, choosing France when Alsace ceased to be French; his great-uncle Moïse Schuhl was a chief rabbi. He was called to the bar in 1954, became bâtonnier of Belfort, practised criminal law and made the defence of individual liberties the constant of his public life.

Later years

He was deputy for the Territoire de Belfort from 1967 to 1968, general councillor from 1967 to 1979, and senator from 1980 until his death in 2008, re-elected in 1989 with 80.05 per cent, the highest score in France that year; he was vice-president of the Senate from 1986 to 1998 and a socialist throughout. He described himself as an agnostic, and the fiche says so, since it changes nothing: he presided over the French section of the World Jewish Congress from 1982 to 1986 and sat in the Conseil représentatif des institutions juives de France, considering that a man may owe his community his time without owing it his belief.
