Origins and early life
Michel Drach was born in the third arrondissement of Paris on 18 October 1930 into a Jewish family, and he was a child in that city under the German occupation: the story he would tell thirty years later begins in a school playground, when a classmate asks him whether he is a Jew and the boy does not know, goes home, and is told by his mother and grandmother that he is.
Work and career
He was the cousin of the film-maker Jean-Pierre Melville, born Jean-Pierre Grumbach, and of the actress Nicole Stephane, and it was Melville who brought him into cinema and took him on as an assistant. He trained first as a painter at the Beaux-Arts, then directed his first feature, On n'enterre pas le dimanche, which won the Prix Louis-Delluc in 1960, and followed it with Amelie ou le Temps d'aimer and Elise ou la Vraie Vie.
Recognition
In 1974 he made Les Violons du bal, in which he films himself failing to get his own autobiography financed while the memory of the hidden Jewish child he was, the flight and the crossing into Switzerland, breaks through the present of the shoot; it was selected in competition at Cannes, where his wife Marie-Jose Nat, who played his mother, won the prize for best actress. He then made Le Pull-over rouge, on a miscarriage of justice and the death penalty. He died at Neuilly-sur-Seine on 14 February 1990 and is buried at Pere-Lachaise.
