Kremer pioneered the use of randomized field experiments to test which anti-poverty measures actually work, running trials in Kenyan schools on textbooks, deworming and incentives that reshaped development economics into an evidence-based discipline. He shared the 2019 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. He was born to a Jewish American family.
