Michael Grunstein is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Molecular biologist who showed histones regulate gene expression
The only surviving child of Holocaust survivors, Grunstein was born in Romania and raised in Montreal after the family emigrated. As a postdoc at Stanford he co-invented colony hybridization, the screening technique that made gene cloning practical. At UCLA he then pioneered the genetic analysis of histones in yeast and showed for the first time that histones actively regulate gene expression rather than merely packaging DNA — a founding insight of the field of epigenetics.
