Michael Balcon was born in Birmingham in 1896 to Lithuanian Jewish immigrants from Latvia. He gave Alfred Hitchcock his first directing job and produced his early films, ran Gaumont-British, and from 1938 headed Ealing Studios, where he produced Kind Hearts and Coronets, Whisky Galore!, Passport to Pimlico and The Lavender Hill Mob — the comedies that defined a British idea of itself after the war. He was knighted in 1948.
