How & why

Fortes was a founding figure of British structural-functional anthropology whose fieldwork among the Tallensi of the Gold Coast (now Ghana) produced landmark studies of kinship, ancestor worship and the developmental cycle of domestic groups. As William Wyse Professor at Cambridge he shaped a generation of social anthropologists. He was born into a Jewish family in South Africa.
