Calvin traced the chemical pathway by which plants turn carbon dioxide into sugars during photosynthesis — the cycle that bears his name — using radioactive carbon-14 as a tracer, and received the 1961 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He led research for decades at the University of California, Berkeley. He was the son of Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire, from present-day Lithuania and Georgia.
