Melissa Manchester, born to a Jewish family in the Bronx (her father was a bassoonist with the Metropolitan Opera), is an American singer-songwriter and one of the leading balladeers of 1970s and 1980s pop. She scored hits such as 'Midnight Blue' and 'Don't Cry Out Loud', won a Grammy, and was twice Oscar-nominated for songs. She has sustained a decades-long career as a performer, writer and educator.
