How & why

Born Robert Allen Zimmerman to a Jewish family in Minnesota, Dylan drew on folk, blues and the American songbook to create songs of unprecedented literary force. From the early 1960s his lyrics fused poetry with popular music, shaping the culture of a generation and expanding what a song could say. In 2016 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature 'for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition'.
