Mayer Lehman is recognized among Jewish contributors to Economics & Business — One of the three founding brothers of Lehman Brothers; in Alabama and then New York he made tsedaka — the joy of giving — the family's working principle.
Mayer Lehman was born in 1830 to a German Jewish family in Rimpar, near Würzburg, and joined his brothers Henry and Emanuel in Montgomery, Alabama — the third of the three founding brothers of Lehman Brothers. He was the one who stayed in the South longest and was known there for his relief work; the tradition he emphasised in his family, according to the record they left, was tsedaka, the joy of giving. His descendants include Herbert H. Lehman, governor of New York and United States senator. The firm the brothers made lasted from 1850 until 2008.
