Born to Jewish parents in Vienna, Maximilian Hoffman fled Nazi Europe and reached New York, where in the 1950s he became the man who taught America to love the European sports car. From his Park Avenue showroom designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, he imported Porsche, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, BMW and Mercedes — and he did not just sell cars, he caused them: it was at Hoffman's insistence that Mercedes turned its racing coupé into the road-going 300 SL Gullwing (over 80% of them sold in America) and that BMW built the 507 roadster. Few people put more beautiful machines on the world's roads without designing a single one.
