Max Bergmann was a biochemist who pioneered the chemistry of proteins and peptide synthesis, developing methods (with Leonidas Zervas) for protecting amino acids that made controlled peptide synthesis possible. A student of Emil Fischer, he was forced by the Nazis to leave Germany and continued his work at the Rockefeller Institute in New York. He was Jewish.
