Maurice Szafran is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Co-founded the weekly Marianne with Jean-François Kahn in 1997 and ran it until 2013; author of 'Les Juifs dans la politique française' and of a life of Simone Veil.
Origins and early life
Maurice Szafran was born on 10 September 1954, in the words of his French Wikipedia article, 'dans une famille juive du 16e arrondissement de Paris' — into a Jewish family of the 16th arrondissement.
Work and career
He began in 1977 on the sports desk of Le Matin de Paris, moved to the culture pages of Le Point, and became director of Jean-François Kahn's L'Événement du jeudi. With Kahn he founded the weekly Marianne in 1997, took charge of its newsroom at once, and was elected unanimously to head the paper in July 2008, leaving in November 2013 after a strategic split with the other shareholders. He wrote 'Les Juifs dans la politique française' (1992) and a life of Simone Veil.
The record also carries a 2015 defamation conviction, alongside Jean-Claude Jaillette, over Marianne's treatment of the researcher Gilles-Éric Séralini. Since December 2025 he heads Éditions Croque Futur and is publisher of Challenges, Sciences et Avenir and La Recherche.
