Maurice Sendak wrote and drew 'Where the Wild Things Are' (1963), the picture book that granted children the right to be angry and frightening and still be loved, followed by 'In the Night Kitchen' and 'Outside Over There'. He won the Caldecott Medal, the Hans Christian Andersen Award, the National Medal of Arts and the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. He was born in Brooklyn to Polish-Jewish immigrant parents, Sadie Schindler and Philip Sendak, a dressmaker.
Many of his relatives were murdered in the Holocaust, and he said that childhood knowledge of their deaths introduced him to mortality far too early.
