Martin Schechter was an American mathematician whose work concerned partial differential equations, spectral theory, functional analysis and mathematical physics, and who authored widely used textbooks including 'Principles of Functional Analysis.' He taught for many years at NYU and at the Jewish-founded Yeshiva University before moving to UC Irvine; he was Jewish.
