Mária Telkes came from a Hungarian family with Jewish forebears — her grandfather Simon Telkes was from a Jewish family. Working at MIT she developed a solar still that turned seawater into drinking water, issued in the life rafts of American airmen in the Second World War, and in 1948 designed the Glauber's-salt heat store for the Dover Sun House, the first dwelling heated entirely by solar energy. She was called 'the Sun Queen' and holds some twenty patents.
