Born in Canada to Ukrainian Jewish immigrants, Nirenberg spent his career at NYU's Courant Institute, where he became one of the greatest analysts of partial differential equations of the twentieth century. His results, including the Gagliardo–Nirenberg inequalities, underpin modern geometry and mathematical physics, and in 2015 he shared the first Abel Prize with John Nash.
