How & why

Louis Klein Diamond was an American pediatrician regarded as the father of pediatric hematology. He identified erythroblastosis fetalis (Rh disease of the newborn) and pioneered exchange transfusion to treat it, saving countless infants, and described several inherited blood disorders including Diamond-Blackfan anemia. Born in Kishinev, his Jewish family emigrated to the United States after the 1903 Kishinev pogrom.
