How & why

Lorenzo Da Ponte was an Italian poet and librettist who wrote the librettos for three of Mozart's greatest operas — 'The Marriage of Figaro,' 'Don Giovanni' and 'Così fan tutte' — and later brought Italian opera and literature to the United States as the first professor of Italian at Columbia. He was born Emanuele Conegliano into a Jewish family in the Venetian ghetto; the family converted to Catholicism when he was fourteen, upon which he took his Christian name.
