Biography
Lionel Tertis is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Classical violist
How & why
Lionel Tertis was an English violist who did more than almost anyone to establish the viola as a solo instrument, inspiring new works, developing a larger 'Tertis model' viola and championing the instrument for over half a century. He was Jewish, born to a Polish-Jewish immigrant family. His advocacy transformed the viola's place in classical music.
