Lev Petrovich Pitaevskii was a Russian-Italian theoretical physicist and a leading figure in condensed-matter and low-temperature physics. With Eugene Gross he derived the Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates, and he co-authored several volumes of the celebrated Landau-Lifshitz course. Born to a Jewish family in Saratov, he later worked in Italy at Trento.
