How & why

Lev Berg was a biologist and geographer who became one of Russia's foremost ichthyologists, laid foundations for limnology, and advanced a theory of evolution he called nomogenesis. He long presided over the Soviet Geographical Society. He was born into a Jewish family in Bessarabia; like some relatives he was baptised into Christianity in order to study at Moscow University.
