Cyrus Levinthal was an American molecular biologist best known for formulating 'Levinthal's paradox' (1969): the observation that a protein could not possibly fold by randomly sampling all its conformations, since that would take longer than the age of the universe, implying that folding follows guided pathways. He was also a pioneer of computer graphics for molecular modeling. He was born to a Jewish family and was Jewish.
