Biography

Leon Ehrenpreis is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Partial differential equations; the Ehrenpreis-Malgrange theorem

How & why

Leon Ehrenpreis was an American mathematician who, independently of Bernard Malgrange, proved the Malgrange–Ehrenpreis theorem — the fundamental result that every non-zero linear partial differential operator with constant coefficients has a fundamental solution. He taught at NYU's Courant Institute, Yeshiva University and Temple. An Orthodox Jew ordained as a rabbi by Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, he was also a lifelong New York City Marathon runner.
