Ferlinghetti was an American poet, painter and publisher who co-founded City Lights Bookstore and its press in San Francisco, championed the Beat writers, and published Allen Ginsberg's Howl, winning a landmark 1957 obscenity trial that expanded free-speech protections; his own collection A Coney Island of the Mind became one of the best-selling poetry books in America. He was of partial Sephardic Jewish descent through his maternal grandfather.
