How & why

Laura Z. Hobson was an American novelist best known for Gentleman's Agreement (1947), a bestseller exposing genteel antisemitism in postwar America, adapted into the Oscar-winning film. The daughter of Russian Jewish socialist immigrants (born Zametkin), she was Jewish and drew on that experience in her work. Her fiction repeatedly confronted prejudice and social hypocrisy.
