Baczyński was a Polish poet, one of the most gifted of the 'Generation of Columbuses' whose lyrical and apocalyptic verse became emblematic of Poland under Nazi occupation. His mother was of Jewish descent, and he was raised Catholic. A soldier of the Home Army, he was killed in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising at the age of 23, and is now regarded as a national poet.
