Klára Dán was born in Budapest to a wealthy Jewish couple, Károly Dán and Kamilla Stadler, and left Europe as the war approached. Self-taught, she wrote and ran the programs that implemented the Monte Carlo method on ENIAC in 1948 and later on MANIAC I — among the first modern-style code executed on a computer, and the first written by a woman — and coded the first computerised weather forecasts.
