Brandys was a Polish writer and essayist of Jewish origin, one of the most important prose voices of postwar Poland. After early engagement with the communist system he became disillusioned and turned to subtle, personal fiction and essays; his 'Warsaw Diary' and novels record the moral atmosphere of life under communism. He emigrated after the 1981 martial law and settled in Paris. He was of Jewish background.
