Biography

Karl Polanyi is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — Economic anthropologist and historian, author of 'The Great Transformation'

How & why

Karl Polanyi, an economic historian and anthropologist, argued in 'The Great Transformation' (1944) that the self-regulating market was a historical construct whose disembedding from society drove the upheavals of the 20th century. He came from a Jewish family in Budapest and Vienna and fled the rise of fascism, teaching in Britain, the United States and Canada. His concepts of reciprocity, redistribution and embeddedness reshaped economic anthropology.
