Karl Marx was a philosopher, economist and revolutionary whose 'Communist Manifesto' (1848, with Friedrich Engels) and 'Das Kapital' reshaped politics, economics and social thought worldwide. His analysis of capitalism and class remains among the most influential in modern history. He was of Jewish ancestry — both grandfathers were rabbis — though his father converted to Lutheranism and Marx was baptized as a child.
