Karl Landsteiner was an Austrian-Jewish American immunologist who discovered human blood groups.
Karl Landsteiner was born near Vienna to Jewish parents and later converted to Catholicism. In 1900–1901 he discovered that human blood comes in distinct groups — the ABO system — explaining why some transfusions succeeded while others were fatal, and making safe blood transfusion possible for the first time. He later co-discovered the Rh factor and the polio virus. For the blood-group work he received the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
