Julius Benedict

Sir Julius Benedict was a German-born composer and conductor who settled in London and became a leading figure of British musical life, remembered above all for his opera 'The Lily of Killarney' and for championing the concert scene. He was born into a Jewish banking family in Stuttgart; he later converted to Christianity, but his Jewish origins are well documented. He was knighted for his services to music.
