Ferdinand Hiller

Ferdinand Hiller was a German composer, conductor, pianist and teacher, born to a Jewish family in Frankfurt (later converting to Christianity), who was a central figure in nineteenth-century German musical life and a friend of Mendelssohn, Chopin and Berlioz. He founded and long directed the Cologne Conservatory, shaping generations of musicians. He composed prolifically across opera, oratorio, symphony and chamber music.
