Juan Gelman was an Argentine poet, one of the major Latin American poets of his generation, winner of the Cervantes Prize (2007), whose politically engaged and grief-laden verse was marked by the disappearance of his son and daughter-in-law under the military dictatorship. He spent years in exile, largely in Mexico. Born in Buenos Aires to Ukrainian-Jewish immigrant parents, he was Jewish.
