How & why
Kessel was a French journalist, adventurer and novelist, member of the Académie française, whose reportage-driven fiction includes Belle de Jour and Army of Shadows (L'Armée des ombres), and who co-wrote the lyrics of the Resistance anthem 'Le Chant des Partisans'. Born in Argentina to a Lithuanian-Jewish physician's family, he wrote often about exile, courage and Jewish life, and was Jewish.
