Biography

John Elkann is recognized among Jewish contributors to Economics & Business — Chairman of Exor, Stellantis and Ferrari, heir of the Agnelli industrial family

How & why

Origins and early life

John Elkann was born on 1 April 1976 in New York. His mother, Margherita Agnelli, is the daughter of Gianni Agnelli, the longtime head of Fiat; his father is the writer and journalist Alain Elkann, who is Jewish on both sides — Alain's father, Jean-Paul Elkann, a French industrialist, presided over the Central Consistory of French Jewry, and his mother, Carla Ovazza, came from a Jewish banking family of Turin.

Work and career

John himself was baptized and raised Catholic — this fiche says so plainly; he figures in this directory by his documented Jewish father, and this entry is strictly genealogical and factual. Chosen by his grandfather in 1997 as the family's designated heir, he became chairman of Fiat in 2010 and led the group's merger into Stellantis in 2021. Today he chairs Exor, the family holding company, as well as Stellantis and Ferrari, making him one of the central figures of European industry.
