John Cahn is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Materials scientist known for the Cahn–Hilliard equation on phase separation
Cahn, a materials scientist born to a Jewish family in Germany that fled the Nazis, transformed the theory of how materials organize themselves. The Cahn-Hilliard equation he devised describes how mixtures separate into distinct phases and is used across physics, materials science and image processing. At the U.S. National Bureau of Standards he was also a co-author of the discovery of quasicrystals with Dan Shechtman.
