Joe Kubert was one of the most influential American comic-book artists, defining the look of DC Comics characters Sgt. Rock and Hawkman over a career spanning six decades. In 1976 he founded the Kubert School, the first accredited school devoted to cartooning, and he authored the Holocaust graphic novel 'Yossel'. Born to a Jewish family in Poland — his father was a kosher butcher — he came to Brooklyn as an infant.
