Jerzy Kosinski, born Josek Lewinkopf, was a Polish-American novelist whose books 'The Painted Bird' and 'Being There' brought him international fame; the latter he adapted into an acclaimed film. A Jewish child, he survived the Holocaust in occupied Poland hidden by Catholic families. He was Jewish.
