Jac Holzman is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Founded Elektra Records at nineteen with $600 and Nonesuch Records in 1964; signed The Doors, and helped launch both the CD and the pilot that became MTV.
Jac Holzman was born to a Jewish family in New York, the son of a Manhattan doctor. In 1950, at nineteen and with about six hundred dollars, he founded Elektra Records out of a college dormitory; it began with folk and blues and ended up releasing The Doors, Love, Judy Collins and the Stooges. In 1964 he founded Nonesuch, which made classical and world music affordable and then commissioned Steve Reich and Philip Glass.
Later, as a technologist at Warner, he helped launch the compact disc and the home-video business, and ran the pilot programme that became MTV. He entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.
