Biography

J.D. Salinger is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Author of 'The Catcher in the Rye'

How & why

J.D. Salinger was an American author whose 1951 novel 'The Catcher in the Rye' became one of the most influential works of 20th-century literature before he withdrew into decades of seclusion. His father, Sol Salinger, was of Lithuanian-Jewish descent, while his mother was of Scots-Irish origin; Salinger learned as a teenager that she was not Jewish, so his Jewish connection is through his father (partial ancestry).
