Ivan Illich is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — Profiled in Thinkers of the 20th Century
Illich was a radical social critic and former Catholic priest whose books 'Deschooling Society', 'Medical Nemesis' and 'Tools for Conviviality' challenged the institutions of education, medicine and industrial development. He co-founded the influential CIDOC center in Cuernavaca, Mexico. His mother was of Sephardic Jewish descent, and the family's partly Jewish ancestry forced them to flee Nazi-annexed Vienna.
