Biography

Bernard Berenson is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — Profiled in Thinkers of the 20th Century

How & why

Berenson was the most influential connoisseur of Italian Renaissance painting of his age, whose authentications and catalogues shaped the great American art collections and the market itself. His villa I Tatti near Florence became a renowned centre of scholarship, later bequeathed to Harvard. He was born into a Lithuanian Jewish family that emigrated to Boston, and though he later converted to Christianity his Jewish origins are well documented.
