Gelfand made vast contributions to functional analysis, representation theory and applied mathematics, including the Gelfand representation of Banach algebras. Born into a Jewish family in what is now Ukraine, he led an influential seminar in Moscow for decades before moving to Rutgers University. He was among the most wide-ranging mathematicians of the twentieth century.
