Born into a Jewish family in Otterberg, Isidor Straus and his brother Nathan became co-owners of Macy's in 1896 and made it the world's largest store. He served in Congress and turned down a cabinet post. On the night of April 15, 1912, aboard the Titanic, he refused a place in a lifeboat while women and children remained; his wife Ida refused to leave him — 'Where you go, I go.' They were last seen together on deck. A monument in their memory stands in Straus Park, Manhattan.
