Fankuchen was an American X-ray crystallographer who, working in England with J. D. Bernal, helped pioneer the crystallographic study of biological macromolecules, including early X-ray work on tobacco mosaic virus. He later built a leading crystallography school at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and trained a generation of structural scientists. He was born into a Jewish family in New York City.
