Irving Layton is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Poet / lyricist
Irving Layton, born Israel Pincu Lazarovitch, was a Romanian-born Canadian poet whose passionate, provocative verse helped free Canadian poetry from genteel restraint and made him one of the country's most influential literary figures. Brought as an infant to Montreal's Jewish immigrant quarter, he was Jewish and often wrote from that identity. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
