Biography

Imre Lakatos is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Philosophy of mathematics; Proofs and Refutations

How & why

Imre Lakatos (born Imre Lipschitz) was a Hungarian-born philosopher of mathematics and science whose 'Proofs and Refutations' (1976) portrayed mathematics as a fallible, evolving process of conjecture and criticism, and who developed the 'methodology of scientific research programmes'. He survived the war under a changed name and later worked at the LSE. He was born into a Jewish family and lost his mother and grandmother in Auschwitz.
