Origins and early life
Herbert Lom was born Herbert Charles Angelo Kuchačevič ze Schluderpacheru on 11 September 1917 in Prague.
Work and career
His mother, Olga Gottlieb, was of Jewish descent, while his father was Christian — a point on which the available sources (Wikipedia, IMDb, genealogical records) converge without contradiction, though no dedicated academic encyclopedia states it; this fiche says so plainly. He left Czechoslovakia for Britain in 1939, on the eve of the German occupation, and built one of the longest careers in British cinema. He played Napoleon twice — in The Young Mr.
Pitt and in King Vidor's War and Peace (1956) — was one of the criminal gang of The Ladykillers (1955), took the title role in Hammer's The Phantom of the Opera (1962), and entered comic legend as Chief Inspector Dreyfus, driven to twitching madness by Peter Sellers's Clouseau across the Pink Panther films from 1964 onward. He died in his sleep in London on 27 September 2012, at ninety-five.
